Hand-knotted on looms located in the ancient city of Jaipur, India, wool rugs like this one were an inspiration to William Morris and other noted Arts and Crafts designers of textiles and wallpapers. This design is from a rug woven during the 17th-century reign of the Mughal king Jahangir, whose tomb is located near Shalimar Gardens in Lahore. The fineness of the weave on such a classical Indian piece gives it an intricacy and life-like quality not often found on knotted carpets.
